PANELS

Hip Hop gives voice to those who do not have one. This slogan can be summed up as the impulse, the need and the purpose of the hip hop culture and movement in its 50 years of life. In the debate about giving voice and taking the floor, an emerging theme is the one posed by a boy during a recent masterclass of a laboratory of the Keep It Real project: what to do with the voice if, once obtained, you have nothing to say? So, today what relationship is, can and must be there between Hip Hop and one’s voice, in its various forms of verbal and non-verbal communication?

Guests: Giuseppe “Nexus” Gatti, Giulia Giorgi, Francois Gautret , Victor Olid, Stritti

For 5 years the scientific committee of the Hip Hop Cinefest has been questioning whether Hip Hop cinema can be a film genre in its own right. The HHCF carries out an in-depth investigation into the works that are produced every year, mostly documentaries, which tell the most disparate scenarios: from the ghettos of Madagascar to the Roman suburbs up to stories of Central American pandillas, the stories told in these works often generated by the impulse of the directors who are active members of the very community they want to tell are countless. The contribution given by cinema to Hip Hop culture is now undeniable, publications on the subject are multiplying and the first university courses that mention Hip Hop as a genre are starting to appear. The panel therefore aims to be the final point of the discussion carried out so far, defining this film genre in academic terms once and for all.

Guests: Maurizio Quagliolo, Mr Thoms, Trota, Veronica Benza, Arash Roman Doors, Luca Borriello, Claudio Gnessi

Primary and founding art of Hip Hop, Graffiti has over the years gone from the social stigmatization that considered it vandalism for all the first decades of its appearance, until it transformed into one of the most innovative and important visual artistic currents of the 2000s, with artists now fully entered into the contemporary art market. The panel will focus on the identity and artistic properties of mural art, as well as the transition that many artists have made from the anti-systemic gesture of illegal graffiti to legal and authorized mural work, which has given cities around the world free art for all. The aim is to delimit the boundaries within which graffiti remains Hip Hop.

Guests: Jacopo Ferri, Giallo, Gino Rota, Drago Publishing

Panel focused on identifying the artistic characteristics of breakdance, from its appearance as a street dance to its definition as a contemporary dance and, in recent years, also as an Olympic sport. We will discuss the aggregative capacity of breakdancing, its uses in socio-educational terms and how it is one of the main vehicles for the diffusion of Hip Hop culture in the world, thanks to the supra-linguistic power of pure performing arts such as dance. Particular attention will be given to the thin line of demarcation between art and sport, in an attempt to limit what is considered Hip Hop by official currents that risk distorting the artistic expression of breakdancing with rules and behavioral codes.

Guests: Dj Hernia, Ice One, Doodie, Dj Azhul
Host: Kwanza Musi Dos Santos + Giulia Chimp Giorgi

We will attempt to identify the historical moment and the works that marked its beginning, starting from its origins within Funk and other related popular musical genres. Its path will also be traced in parallel with the emergence of the figure of the DJ, and the technical peculiarities that this has brought to contemporary music in general. The mixes between traditional local musical culture and hip-hop as well as its current evolutions will be central in this analysis, with the ultimate aim of drawing boundaries within which “hip-hop music” can be defined.
