DOCUMENTARY SHORT

ASCENDANCE

Director: Spencer Wilkinson
Country: United States
Runtime: 17:03
Synopsis: Amidst the pandemic shutting down Oakland’s streets and the rising of the Black Lives Matter movement, artists attempt their tallest and most challenging mural yet, determined to use their creations for justice. ASCENDANCE, a grandiose 90 feet tall mural, is to be created on the ‘Greenlining Institute,’ a building that houses an organization that advocates against systemic racism. This mural is born out of vital Community Benefit Agreements won by the Oakland community in their resistance to luxury condo developers covering up the culturally significant ALICE STREET mural.
Just as the muralists and other community painters create a workaround for Co-Vid, horrific news about the brutalities against Black communities come to the spotlight and the nation is swept by the Black Lives Matter Movement. Oakland, a longtime hotspot for social justice and birthplace of the Black Panthers, takes to the streets. Though initially violent, the protests blossom into artistic expression, transforming broken windows into canvases. ‘AscenDance’ arises in this landscape of public resistance and art.

In the shadow of the Washington Monument and the US Capitol, how did their form of HipHop differ from those of other cities? What made them focus on the poetry, the lyricism, the language, the rhyme, and not on bling, gangsta rap, trippy rap, or other subgenres? How did they intersect with Gogo? with Spoken Word? With the fast-coming gentrification of the area? What happened to the places where they gathered? What are these rap artists doing now? Director: Sharylaine Ildslaine Silva, Clodoaldo Arruda
Country: Brazil
Runtime: 42:00
Synopsis: This documentary presents the encounter between Black and peripheral youth practicing Hip-hop culture and Black feminism in the streets of São Paulo during the late 1980s, which gave rise to the “Rappers Project”. An innovative initiative, it brought voice and protagonism to young victims of racism and social exclusion through the building a space for formation and political articulation in defense of their rights, especially to practice Hip-hop culture in public spaces and to be able to move around the city without being a victim of truculence and violence perpetrated by the police, in addition to creating the first national communication instrument of this movement, the magazine “Pode Crê!”. Black feminist founders and members of the organization Geledés Black Women Institute, such as Sueli Carneiro, Sônia Nascimento, Solimar Carneiro, Nilza Iraci and Deise Benedito, had a space for action and political articulation in the face of racism and sexism consolidated in that context and, by listening to the voice of black youth, built bridges so that hip-hoppers could expand their access to information and knowledge, such as formation on race, gender, class and human rights with social and intellectual leaders engaged in anti-racist and anti-sexist struggles, and to amplify their voices, whether in dialogue with the State or organizations and spaces for international articulation. This work, projected nationally in the magazine “Pode Crê!”, influenced the model of organization and political and cultural formation of young Hip-hoppers throughout the country, and the “Rappers Project” house was the embryonic space that would inspire the emergence of “Casas of Hip Hop” (Hip-hop Houses). After 30 years, participants in this initiative, who began to occupy different spaces in political, cultural, academic life and in different types of institutions in the country, bring testimonials about the role of Hip-hop and black feminism, as well as the promising encounter between these two segments, for the transformation of Brazilian society.

STREET HEROINES

Director: Alexandra Henry
Country: United States
Runtime: 01:12:00
Synopsis: Street Heroines is an award-winning feature-length documentary celebrating the courage and creativity of women who despite their lack of recognition have been an integral part of the graffiti and street art movement since the beginning. Authentic vérité storytelling woven between an interview-driven narrative, Street Heroines juxtaposes the personal experiences of three emerging Latina artists from New York City, Mexico City, and São Paulo as they navigate a male-dominated subculture to establish artistic identities within chaotic urban landscapes.

While numerous graffiti genre documentaries feature familiar names such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey, Street Heroines infiltrates this masculine space by legitimizing women’s voices within an unquestionably important movement that symbolizes far more than the sum of its parts. Now, in the wake of #MeToo and Time’s Up, which have had astounding repercussions for women’s justice, there is no time more relevant for a film that exposes the struggles of female artists worldwide and situates them within the global conversation.

A bastion of female empowerment, Street Heroines gives visibility to fearless artists who create their own opportunities in the name of women’s rights, gender, and economic equality, increased accessibility to the arts, and the celebration of cultural identity.

Through a specific shooting technique, organized around a Plexiglas wall and a multi-camera device, several artists produce works from which Cristobal Diaz creates a choral composition which shows a multiplicity of practices. Tags, graffiti, figuration, calligraphy, abstraction are explored here, and their compositions orchestrated in a singular montage which allows us to glimpse the process of urban artistic creation in an unexpected form.
“The Graffiti Mystery” results from the work of aesthetic exploration carried out by the director as part of a “graffiti gesture experimentation laboratory”.
It aims to be laid bare, an immersive approach to an artistic practice which reveals the creative process, the intensity of the gesture, the scriptural impulse aestheticized in its raw state. It reveals to us what is usually carried out out of sight and that is its mystery.
