Nadja Harek went to meet the activists of this movement. They are dancers, graphic designers, musicians, associations, and they allow a French youth to express themselves and to dream. Hip-hop turns out to be a way to learn to believe in themselves, to find a place in society, to affirm their dreams and their identity.

Grew up in the small town of Poprad in Slovakia he has been since he was six years old. When he was 14, he got his first computer and he was breakdance since already 3 years. He started edit videos in 2003 before the YouTube era, so at that time was all about trying and failing. He has been inspired by Little Shao at the beginning, and was Shao who showed him the tricks to become a professional photographer and videographer in the breaking world and make him believe that it was possible. Today, in the internet era, he is overwhelmed of inspiration and constantly look for people all over the globe who are doing cool things.

KONEE ROK

American music video & documentary director, animator & dancer. He has done film and video work with many popular artists in hip-hop, rap music and breaking culture. Konee is a member of the breaking crew, Chicago Tribe & most recently, Artistic Director with the Golden State Warriors’ Golden State Entertainment film & music label.

ANTOINE SCHIRER
Now a journalist and filmmaker for media outlets (BBC, Le Monde…), Antoine Schirer spent a decade documenting breaking culture. A member of the French collective Style2ouf, he traveled the world to shoot battles and dancers, from the big events like R16 or Chelles Pro, to local jams in Sudan or El Salvador. His most noticed piece is probably “IBE Is Me”, a B-Boy point-of-view short film inspired from a Nike ad, and featuring a number of dance legends including Hong 10, Benji, Mennoh…

PHILIP RACHID
Iraqi Kurdish filmmaker, born in 1978, Sofia, Bulgaria and raised in Amsterdam. He is a self taught Writer, Director, Producer & Consultant. His independent films always have Humanitarian themes. His first recognition came when he shot a short film on a Flip cam in Kurdistan 2011 and the film was screened at the Duhok International Film Festival and nominated in San Diego Kurdish Youth Film festival. In 2014 he won the Samsung Short film competition at The Dubai International Film Festival. After that he won the Silver Act Responsible award in Cannes for a UN Female Rights awareness campaign in 2015. With his new short films “The Moonlight Rider”,  “SHE”  and Hoody Man,  he has been nominated and won 15 awards Internationally 

 

MASON ROSE
He is a photographer, director and creative. Born and raised in Australia Mason has been working in between Hawaii and Los Angeles and California.

STEPHAN CORNELIO VELEMA (Head2Toe crew)
He has been developing a film style best described as  Urban Experimental Narrative. After being part of underground street culture for years and later studying visual design and cinema language, his signature can be found in analyzing emotion and flow out of movement, while maintaining focus on story. Aiming to be both vivid and clear to convey powerful messages. His independent work tends to be conceptual and dark, while his documentary work is open and about touching the core of peoples intrinsic motives. He works project based for creative agencies, production houses and the cultural sector, while maintaining a clear focus on personal creative growth, still photography and development of independent film.

OWEN LING
If you watch any breaking content, the chances are you’ve already seen some of his work. He’s created original content for World Breaking Classic, the Notorious IBE, Undisputed, Red Bull and more. With his work being seen and enjoyed by millions of people across the globe, often unknowingly. Producing everything from livestreams to interviews, event broadcasts, documentaries and original dance content. Outside the dance scene, Owen is a multi-award winning digital creative producing content for advertising campaigns in the UK.

PAUL VAN DAL
He started breaking in 2000 and is one of the co-founder of the breaking crew The Ruggeds. From 2008 onwards Paul has been busy organising breaking events and in 2009, he co-founded World BBoy Classic. From 2013 he has been involved into the Red Bull BC One on an annual base and been responsible for the media production of events such as The Notorious IBE, Undisputed BBoy Masters. In 2016 he co-founded the Dutch Breaking League for the upcoming youth in The Netherlands and since the inclusion of Breaking into the Olympics he’s part of the breaking commission of the Dutch Dance Federation. In 2010 he started co-managing Prodance TV which he later took fully over and transformed into New Dance TV. New Dance TV will be an online platform for high quality street dance content giving the culture it’s platforms it deserves. Driven by the roots of our culture, Paul is determined to make the world of Dancing, and Breaking in particular known to a global audience.
